RAISED BEDS VEGETABLE GARDENS

Community Garden

The benefits

EASY ON THE BACK - Raising the garden to knee level makes gardening activities a breeze. Weeding is much easier without having to bend down to the ground. Less weeds means more food for the plants and ultimately better harvests for you.

LONGER GROWING SEASON - raised beds warm up quicker in the spring than the frozen ground, giving you an earlier start to the growing season.

MORE PLANTS AND MORE FOOD - with no need for walking paths the entire garden footprint can be planted with crops. A healthy soil with adequate drainage means plants can be tucked in a little tighter together too.

UNIQUE DESIGN ELEMENT- raised beds can be the feature of your backyard or can blend in with the current landscaping in place.

The soil

DRAINAGE - Soil that drains freely, pulls nutrients and fresh air to the roots, keeping roots strong and healthy. A well drained soil provides ideal habitat for soil microbes to thrive, which in turn support healthy plants.

SOIL STRUCTURE - No foot traffic in the garden means no more trampled on crops and compacted soil. Hard compacted soil makes it difficult for roots to explore and thrive, leading to stunted growth and poor yields. Compacted soil needs to be loosened, disrupting soil lifeforms and damaging soil structure, two things you don’t want to do.

SOIL TYPE - Native soils at most residential properties is not idea for vegetables to thrive. Subdivisions are cleared of the decent soil layer and the clay content that remains is dense with very poor drainage.

Your raised bed will be filled with a rich blend of peat, compost and sand, the ideal soil for growing vegetables.
